Plenty of model trains and model train designs have been copied after trains that modernized transportation and advancement all over the globe.  Enthusiasts around the world clamor to get their hands on model trains that are modeled after the most distinguished trains of all time. 

A number of the trains and locomotives that were the engineering wonders of their era may now have been placed in museums but they have all been immortalized in collectible model trains that now cruise their lane on model railways within millions of houses.

Model trains have also become part of the pop culture phenomena through TV shows made for kids.  A few of these popular kids’ shows are Chuggington and Thomas and Friends. 

The first locomoties ever created started in the early 1800s and its evolution have come a long way.  The form and the performance of locomotives have evolved in numerours ways for almost two centuries.  Manufacturers of model trains create scale model trains that are based generally on two kinds of locomotives and these are steam and diesel-electric locomotives. 

Steam Trains

Steam locomotives were the first ever mechanized locomotive and transportation.  They are fueled by coal-burning to heat water and the steam created gives the steam locomotive its power and velocity.  While steam locomotives are not as economical or as fast as the other kind of locomotives that came after them, they are more trendy in terms of recognition and their iconic shape is what makes steam locos appealing than other model trains modeled after modern locomotives. 

Diesel Electric Trains

The next generation of diesel-electric locomotives made expenses in operations more cheaper and the speed they generated was much better than steam locomotives.  Even though they were invented in the early 1900s, diesel-electric locomotives are still being operated for moving people and goods.  After steam locomotives, diesel-electric locomotives have a popular model train fan base. 

 A lot of these model trains are manufactured in diverse scale sizes and the most standard of these scales are 00 and H0.  Because of their popularity, these two scales have become a standard measurement for a majority of model train collectors.  00 scale is popular in Europe, particularly in the UK.  In the US and Canada, the popular scale among aficionados is H0. 

Different model train manufacturers such as Bassett-Lowke, Hornby, etc. are committed to supply model train aficionados the sets and collections they want to get their hands on.  A lot of their products are modeled after popular steam and diesel locomotives of numerous models and classes.  Every scale model train created also come in limited numbers in order to make it a rare and valuable collector’s item.
