Are You Concerned About Losing Weight
Fad diets are diets that involve rapid weight loss, but are only to be followed for a short period of time. Another popular culture meaning for the term is a diet that becomes wildly popular for a period of a few months to a few years, and then fades into obscurity. Some of these fad diets include the cabbage soup diet, the Atkins diet, and the cookie diet.
Another name for these fad diets are food faddism. Any time one particular food suddenly becomes a superstar, that’s a food fad. Common aspects of these fads include:
- Some elements of the food are said to have miraculous properties.
- Many other foods are completely eliminated from the diet, because they are thought to have negative properties.
As an example of these elements of fad diets in the diet, take the Atkins diet. In Atkins carbohydrates must be avoided because of their negative characteristics. Carbohydrates take on both of the common elements in that removing carbohydrates from the diet creates a near magical metabolic state in which fat is burned at an incredible rate. This diet even included short phases, followed by sustained phases. Unlike many fad diets the Atkins diet was designed to be something a person could stick to for a long period of time.
As with many have diets, Atkins popularity was extreme and short-lived. It lasted a few years during which it seemed everyone you talked to was on the diet . Every movie star, singer, and sports figure claimed to use the Atkins diet when they needed to lose weight. When Dr. Atkins died to superstardom of his diet died with him.
Fad diets can be unhealthy. Even a seemingly healthy diet like the Subway diet could be dangerous. It revolves around the extreme weight loss case of Jared who ate Subway sandwiches and baked chips to lose over 250 pounds in the span of a single year. In reality Jared cut his caloric intake from over 10,000 calories a day to only 900. That could have killed him. Even so, the Subway diet when followed in moderation can work. Particularly because the diet included exercise — Jared walked 6 miles a day while losing the weight.
Be careful when taking on some of these fad diets. You’re better off learning how to eat well on an everyday basis and maintaining a program of rigorous exercise. Visit wellness for living for more articles about dieting smart.
